SLS Hotel & Casino Las Vegas is a resort and casino which is on the site of the legendary Sahara Hotel at the entrance of Las Vegas Blvd. the SLS Hotels established a dramatic new standard in guest experience with the contemporary and modern design. The project consists of a low rise building which include casino floor, variety of restaurants and bars, and three guestroom towers. The hotel offers over 1600 guest rooms and suites which designed by global design icon Philippe Starck. The sbe Nightlife Group embodies the legendary night clubs and exclusive casino, lounges and pool into the project. The sbe Restaurant Group creates diverse dining places inside the resort. The project includes retails spa, meeting space and ballroom as well.

Historical

The site is famous for the Sahara Hotel and Casino, which opened in 1952. The Sahara Hotel was the sixth hotel built on the Las Vegas Strip. The Sahara Hotel and Casino had 1720 guestrooms and 85000 square feet gaming space. The site is on the northern end of the Las Vegas Strip and most north stop of Las Vegas monorail. At the end of 1954, the hotel hired jazz musician Louis Prima to be their late-night lounge show. This was the creative show concept at that in that time. The jazz concert at the Sahar Hotel, which was led by Louis Priam and his wife Keely Smith, was one of the most famous attractions on Las Vegas Strip. The hotel constructed the first high-rise tower on the Las Vegas Strip in 1959 and added another 24-story Tower in 1963. The 1960 version of Ocean’s 11 was filmed at the Sahara. The Sahara shut down on May 16, 2011 and reopened as SLS Hotel & Casino Las Vegas in August, 23, 2014.

Construction

The SLS Las Vegas was built from the site of legendary Sahara Hotel and Casino. The project is the combination of the new construction and renovation. The structure undergoes six different decades of building codes. The project was using the design-build delivery method. The entire work was broken down into 22 areas as early as the permit-drawings phase. A leader would oversee each area and report back to the general superintendent.

Electrical

The electrical system of SLS Las Vegas is the combination of the existing electrical equipment with the new electrical system. The original electrical equipment had been relocated to coordinate with the new system. The electrical design complied with the NEC Code 2008 edition with Southern Nevada Amendments.  The property had three different service entrance serve different zones in the building. The service entrance “MV” serves the power supply for the Main Casino floor and second floor ballrooms. The service entrance “USD” serves the power supply for the restaurants, back of house and parts of guest room tower. The service entrance “HVMS” serves the guest room tower, the pool area and the circulation areas.

Lighting

The lighting design for SLS Las Vegas in coordination with the architectural features and interior designs to show off the modern stylish and chic design of the project. The entire project featured with rich customized finishes. The lighting was used to “add drama” to the featured spaces. The lighting design of SLS Las Vegas is designed to be in accordance with IECC Code 2009 and the IES lighting handbook 10th Edition. The fixtures in use are fluorescent and LED fixtures with the low DC voltage or 120V. 

Mechanical

The mechanical design was made to utilize as much as existing infrastructure as possible. The HVAC systems was designed of the effective combination of chilled water, heating hot water, and steam. To support these systems, a central plant was modified to hold a capacity of 2710 tons of chilled water, 12500 MBH of heating hot water, and 20926 MBH of steam. Regarding to the plumbing system, the various parts of old system was replaced such as a water softener, grease interceptors, underground waste lines, etc. The underground system would serve eight restaurant, five kitchens and numerous bars and restrooms within the project.

Structural

The original Sahara Hotel building had been experienced several times of expansion before this renovation, but the wood-framed structure had never been updated. To meet the code requirement of the building codes at the construction time such as IBC 2009, the original wood frame structure was removed and replaced by the new steel structure. The project has not been changed the footprint during this renovation but added the space inside the building by enclosing balconies with a curtain wall.

Fire Protection

The fire protection system was updated during the renovation in 2014. A new standpipe system, a diesel fire pumping addition, and various sprinkler upgrades were added to the project to accommodate the fire protection system for the low-rise building. Two ne fire sprinkler system were installed within the guestroom towers.

Transportation

This project contains a low rise building and three guestroom towers. There are two main entrance, one located at the Las Vegas Blvd and the other located at the Paradise Blvd. There is an additional VIP entrance at the Paradise Blvd as well. The first floor of low-rise building has two escalators to the second-floor ballrooms and conference rooms. Three separated elevator lobbies to three different guest room towers are located at different sides of the hotel registration area. 

Telecommunications

The main telecommunication equipment T-1-BSM is located in the basement and split out in the first floor. All the caballing, pathway, ground bus and termination hardware was provided with identification in accordance with the 11A/EIA 606. The conduit using for the telecommunication system usually has four sets of cable in it. The telecommunication system using the cable with diameter of the range of 0.2” to 0.625”.
